Covering 5,130 sq km, it has a moderate summer climate and cold winters, often with snow. Declared a nature reserve, it’s famed for religious tourism, safaris, and mountain climbing, with locals working in agriculture, herding, and tourism.
Named after Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a learned Christian martyr killed in 307 AD, her body was later found on a Sinai mountain and moved to the 6th-century Monastery of Saint Catherine, built by Emperor Justinian.
Mount Moses (Mount Sinai) is the biblical site where Moses received the Ten Commandments, called the “mountain of God.” Scholars debate if Sinai and Horeb are the same mountain or two peaks; John Calvin and Abraham ibn Ezra viewed them as two sides or peaks of one mountain.
