Monastic Heritage of Wadi El Natrun
Itinerary
- Depart from your Cairo hotel for a full-day tour to Wadi El Natrun, a sacred desert valley with deep spiritual and historical significance. This area holds a special place in Christian tradition, believed to have been part of the route taken by the Holy Family during their flight into Egypt
- Wadi El Natrun became a cornerstone of early Christian monasticism in the 4th century AD, with the founding of the Monastery of Anba Makar (Saint Macarius the Great), a disciple of Saint Anthony. At its peak, the valley was home to over 700 monasteries, making it one of the most revered sites for followers of the Coptic Orthodox Church.
Your tour will include visits to four of the remaining ancient monasteries, each rich in history and spiritual heritage:
Monastery of Anba Makar (Saint Macarius): Founded by the great desert father and still an active monastery today.
Monastery of Anba Bishoy: The largest of the four, established by Anba Bishoy, a disciple of Saint Macarius, in the late 4th century.
Monastery of the Syrians (Virgin Mary Monastery): The smallest monastery in the region, founded by Syrian monks in the 6th century. It features four churches, a fortified tower, and the original cell where Saint Bishoy once secluded himself.
Monastery of Baramus (Virgin Mary Monastery): Named after the Roman saints Maximus and Domitius and established in the 6th century. The name “Baramus” comes from the Coptic word meaning “of the Romans.”
Enjoy a peaceful day immersed in monastic life and centuries-old religious traditions before returning to Cairo for an overnight stay at your hotel.
